Rope Splicing -The Basics

When a halyard breaks you can do some rope splicing as a temporary fix. The longevity of the fix depends on your ability to join the two ends.

<<>> Bind with cord each broken piece six inches from the end. Both ends once bound should be un ravelled.

Now untie one of the binds and bring the to ends so that you can weave one in to the other. You should try to get each thread to weave three times. Complete the weave by doing the same process for the other side. Untie the bind and weave the threads together.

It is best to practice splicing before repairing a load bearing line. A splice is only as strong as your ability to weave those strands together. It is a temporary solution and the rope should be replaced ASAP.
