Roller Furler - The Cruisers Choice
Roller furlers make fore deck work much easier. This system does just that. You can modify the amount of sail out or in, by let out or taking in.
<<>> They offer the ability for a four in one sail. From number one when fully unfurled to a storm jib. All controlled aft. This cruiser sailors dream bit of kit, is also easy to maintain with relatively few parts to go wrong.
Most issues have been overcome. However common reasons for trouble include: Halyards coming off the top of the drum unit and wrapping around the fore stay. The halyard also comes off the drum unit and when there is too much sail for the wind, the slack line will wrap around the drum. Not pretty, but easily fixed. The trick is to adjust the sail area when the wind lulls.
In order to check it works properly, this is what you should do: Tighten the back stay. Open and furl the sail, asking yourself whether it's easy and smooth. If not then servicing is required. Drop the sail.
Check the luff groove and seek out snagging and obstructions, silicone spray is helpful, but remember it will build up over time. Examine the drum, look at it's action for irregularities. Check the halyards - are they worn? Can they be coiled easily or are they stiff? Do the same for the furl line.
Look at the sail, particularly for wear on the UV protection strip. If you sail a lot, or in warm climates the UV strip may have to be replaced every two or three years. Now re hoist and tension once more.
