Midlayers Are Key To Temperature Regulation Onboard
By wearing several midlayers between, your jacket and skin saves warmth. Regulating your body temperature onboard can be tricky. One minute your enjoying the view and the next your at the pointy end, sweating a number two. Different crew positions demand different levels of physical activity. Helm and nav are more concerned with keeping the boat on course but less about grinding a winch. Thermal suits are useful especially during the Spring series!

Before setting sail, some thought should be put into how busy you expect to be through the day on board. If your expecting little action and it's cold - then wearing long johns or several fleeces will keep you warm. If on the other hand you know it's going to be no stop from start to finish then modify accordingly. As long as your not quickly bearing down on a mark whilst racing, skippers don't mind that you pop below to unrobe or dress up.
So long sleeve t - shirts are good news for heat regulation? Not if there cotton! Having cotton next to your skin is like wearing a sponge. After you warm up and your body regulates it's temperature by sweating then you've got an absorbent layer soaking up that moisture. When you stop your activity, then you will cool down quickly and stay that way! Not comfortable. Great for apres sail party comfort, but not practical.
Help is at hand of course. Thanks to modern fibers that wick moisture away from the skin and allow breathability. polyester on board is a good thing but recyled polyester - even better! The warm issue is solved. Manufacturers have even added a radiation element to their technical gear - game on!
