Installing Marine Wifi Nav Instruments

Advantage of marine wifi nav instruments is that you don't have to run the wires from the top of the mast to the instruments. However there are wires involved connecting the hull transmitter and wireless interface.

Telescopic Mounting

Instructions on how to fit the log impeller

Find a spot on the hull that is not much turbulence or near any other fittings which induce flow characteristics. Midships is good, but not on the keel! Bear in mind that the opposite side of the hull needs to be clear of bulkheads and obstructions too. Possibilities include drilling the hole for the log impeller into a locker. The spot chosen must allow apace to maneuver connecting wires etc.

Getting started

You've identified the spot to drill having checked that the interior is free where the hole will be. This is when a friend can be useful, saving time. First drill a pilot hole through the hull from the inside out. When carrying out hull work it is always best to work on the inside to the outside. This minimizes disturbance within the hull.

Using the hole saw - having checked the width of the skin fitting, for a one drill policy. Drill through almost the whole way to the outside. Stopping regularly to blow out any dust or particles. Now finish the process from the outside. Follow the pilot hole for guidance. Towards the end of the stage, drill slowly so that you can monitor the progress. This also means the edges of the hole are smooth.

Smooth the edges of the hole and check that the skin fitting fits, it should be snug. Look at the edges of the hole on the hull, if there are scratches or nicks, then use an epoxy to stop water damage. Once that has cured, use the polysulphide sealant around the edge of the skin fitting. Use the arrow provided on the exterior part of the fitting ot align the log impeller fore and aft, as per the instructions.

Attach the transponder unit to the skin fitting using the supplies provided. You need to connect the log impeller and depth sounder to the transmitter unit. This allows you to place your instruments wherever you like in the boat - with out any wires. For mast wind speed however an ascent of the mast is necessary. Before climbing, make sure that the instruments are registering each other. Follow the instructions.

Once the mast wind instrument is attached to the top of the mast, you should have a wireless set on board, the advantage of which is that there is no need for long reaches of wires running about in inconvenient places.
