Marine Rope Demonstrates Different Qualities

Depending on the usage, marine rope comes with different qualities and grades. What suits one job, will not necessarily suit another.

To this end design is a factor. As technology has advanced, the thickness has decreased, whilst durability increases.

The more seriously a sailor takes his / her sport then the more detail orientated they become regarding specific qualities. halyards for example are made from thermo plastic yarn, which is a polymer. It is very strong and designed to manage loads in great excess of it's requirements. This means that is very durable. They are either made up of two cores inner and outer, or inner core with braided outer. The later tends to be used more for cruising.

Similar to halyards leech-lines are under tension whilst working. The ability to tension or un tension leech lines make a difference to the foresail performance. In order to achieve a smooth curve in the foresail, the sail must have the ability to alter it's shape. The leech line offers this. By letting the line in or out you can find the optimum point for the strength of wind.

dock lines are often double braided. Offering greater strength than stranded alternatives of the same width.

Of course mooring lines also need to stand up to the abrasion of the boat knocking about. Stranded varieties offer an easier splice in case of breakage.

Abrasion resistance and shock bearing ability are key to anchor lines They should not kink when they are in the locker either. Strength under load is critical too. Manufactures make these warps beyond the international specifications, ensuring customer satisfaction.

To distinguish between different lines, it is usual to have similar colors for similar functions. Blue sheets are used for the foresail and another set used for the spinnaker sheets. This helps set them apart from the spinnaker guys, which are red.
