Illumination! Marine Navigation Lights

For safety sake marine navigation lights are obligatory! Providing an aid to navigation. They are also standard colors to help.

<<>> Since battery life or alternative power sources have to be kept topped up, the onus is for suitable illumination for minimum power used. After dusk, you want to know others can distinguish your vessel from the darkness. Likewise you'd rather not go through the trauma of hitting another sea goer due to light failure.

For sailboats there are standard colors for port - red, starboard - green, mast - white, anchor - white, stern or transom - white. Of course there are also signaling lights, harbor lights and others to define larger vessels or obstacles. There is an International Convention for preventing accidents at sea. Standard marine illumination is part of that.

In order to maintain your batteries, it is advised not to run them out less more than 50% capacity. If you run then out to 50% then they will recharge to there optimum level once again. Bare in mind that once recharged the battery will not return to 100% capacity. So gradually over time the efficiency of the battery goes down.Lamps stay on from dusk till dawn, unless your tuck up in a berth. So they are using a little power over perhaps ten hours over the course of your trip.

It is good practice to routinely charge the batteries so there is never any doubt of maintaining the regulations.
