Man Overboard Pole - Pretend It's A Javelin!

Should someone go over the side. The man overboard pole is very useful for tracking where they are. The trouble with this situation is turning the boat around in heavy seas. This is known as a MOB rescue turn. Trying to find someone in the water is very tricky on top of that.

It should be easily accessible and explanation of use be given to all on board. It needs to thrown as accurately as possible towards the victim.

<<>>They can swim towards it as best chance of being found. People tend to go over in rough seas. On one end there is a weighted float. On contact with water, this float will pull the stick into the air. On the elevated end there is a light that flashes intermittently. This end is elevated so the crew on board can see it.

Once everyone knows about the situation, whoever saw them go over should keep an eye on them. Point at the target. Get someone else to throw the equipment to the water. However is in the water needs to swim to the flashing light, hopefully they will have a flotation device thrown from the boat too.

As the boat is turned back, the crew can identify where to rescue from. Have a boarding ladder lowered over the side. Make sure that the person is warm and dry as soon as possible after the recovery. A good idea is to read up on sea survival rescue tips. Any knowledge a person has about looking after themselves in the water will help.
