Cleaning the boat

As the days get shorter towards winter, it's time to think about putting your sailboat away. How to winterize your boat is your video guide to successfully maintaining your sailboat for winter.

The first video

in this series is aimed at cleaning the boat. Cleaning your vessel is the first step to winterization. Imagine coming back to your yacht or boat in the spring to find it in poor shape. Algae in the bilge, encrusted dirt in the crevices on deck, rotting canvas - disgusting!

Like you, Boatpride is all about loving your boat. So in the spirit of things, I've set out some areas for your consideration. Be sure to watch the video on this post for added detail from the guys at West Marine. Naturally you can find all the cleaning products related to this stage of winterization at the bottom of the post.

Cleaning the decks

You need to thoroughly clean away all the accumulated dirt and grime. Using a hose to jet water into those difficult to reach places, whilst brushing down with a brush is the idea. If you don't make the effort now, you will regret it in the spring!

Teak decks

If you have a teak deck, now is the time to re protect your teak decks before any damage gets worse through the winter weather. You may find that recaulking is required too.

Fiberglass protection

Once you've got the boat out of the water, you should get to work waxing and polishing the fiberglass all of it! The work you put in now means you avoid any trouble down the line.

Using a high quality product is best. Then you have peace of mind, that is after a lot of elbow grease! You'll see all the cleaning products you need at the bottom of this page.

Now for the West Marine video

Canvas protection

If left for months, when your boat is out of the water, you may find your canvas is in really bad shape. The time you invest in cleaning it of salt build up and applying a protective layer of preservative will save you from a dreadful shock when the weather warms up!

Polishing the hull

Yes, you guessed it! Washing down the hull and polishing before winter is the best money saving idea! You may find your gelcoat needs attention or some fiberglass repair is required. Keeping the hull in mint condition is imperative!

Brightwork tip

The best idea is to polish up your brightwork before you leave the boat for winter. After you've polished, reapply the polish and leave it on as a protective layer. Your in for a great surprise in the Spring! The shine will be the envy of your friends!
