GPS Marine Navigation A Gift From US Military
GPS marine navigation comes courtesy of the US militiary. Historically used to aid in their maneuvers giving location assistance. The system works regardless of weather conditions and allows for a location fix within fifteen meters.<<>>
The unit allows sailors to have instant access to data on deck - imagine bringing a paper chart on deck in a force four!
The way it works is as follows: satellites circumvent the earth twice daily. There are over twenty satellites for this purpose at the moment. They travel at 7,000 miles / hour.
Your unit sends a signal to satellites which are in range. In order to get a triangulated fix three satellites are required. The unit works out it's position from the time it's signal goes to and from the satellite.
By putting in longitude and latitude for waypoints, your unit will determine: ETA, speed, bearing, track, trip distance, distance to destination and more. Due to waypoint storage facilities, it is possible to chart courses easily.
Of course the units themselves must be up to the sailboat environment. They are rigorously strength tested and waterproofed to handle the most demanding weather.

Galileo Alternative for Europe
Another system is being developed in Europe to the US version. It will be run by civilians rather than the military. In time Galileo will enhance GPS. The satellites being made, will run independently of the US. However there is a possibility that in the event of one system failing then back up could be available.
All else being equal Galileo will offer accuracy to 8 meters. Being more pin point than the current. This is possible as two frequencies are used rather than one giving better triangulation. This service will commence around 2013.
