Chart Kit - Computer Or Hand Held - You Decide!
Chart kits are reproductions of US government charts. Used by US the coast guard and air / sea rescue alike. Electronic tabulation is split into two non inter changable formats. One requiring greater investment than the other.
<<>>Raster charts as described, are digital prints of lithograghic lay out. They are identical to paper versions. They need to be supported by a computer and one aspect of them is that it is not possible to zoom in on the details, without loosing sharpness. So there is a need for a computer to power the program. Most people would not have to buy a lap top just for this purpose. So in reality there is no increase in investment. Perhaps a downside is that you would want a lap top on deck whilst on the water!
Vector maps are hoisted by such chartplotters as Magellan, Northstar and Garmin. You can zoom in on these lay outs without lose of sharpness. The systems used for Vector maps, include GPS and you obtain data by buying cartridges.
In summary, the Raster option supports the US coastal emergency services and is computer based. Vector is handled through a hand held chartplotter device. Depending on the needs of the sailing and the practicalities of the situation, will dictate which one to use. Of course if sailors are familiar with one type then they are more likely to stick with it. Both versions on board is not out of the question!
