Cable Tension Meter - Get More From Your Rig

<<>>CTM - cable tension meter is used to measure the strain, which the wires or rigging is under.

In order to maintain the rigging and the overall well being of the boat it's important to monitor this tension. The amount of strain the rig is under dictates the performance of the vessel.

Too much stress over time will lead to the hull shape changing, which causes a chain of problems. However too little tension results in abrasive problems, as wires rub against each other. Or worse the mast will fall down!

There is a compromise which stops these actions occurring. A mid range of stress if you like.

<<>> Depending on the kind of sailing you do, will help to make your mind up about the strain required. Racing folk like a lot of stress - on the rig! This makes the overall response of the boat better and so improves performance. More strain does mean more wear. But that's like most aspects of racing!

Cruisers, who enjoy being on the water and getting from A to B comfortably, do not need the rig so powered up. Response is not their primary concern. So the need for strain is lower.

Check with your owner manual to find the recommended levels for each activity.
