Backstay Adjuster - Why Is It So Important?

This piece of rigging is vital. The backstay adjuster supports the mast along with the shrouds. The level of tension in this wire needs careful attention. If the mast is not supported then it will fall down!

The mast's shape can also be altered. The effect of tensioning the mast more, will give a gentle bow shape. This is a good effect. The mast will give better performance. If the mast is straight then it will be under performing.

There are two systems which can be used to alter the tension on this rear support. The original way is manually, using a gauge, which you attach to the screw at the base of the wire and twist.

Remember even a half twist can affect the tension, so read the manual before changing the position! The second method is by hydraulics. This is a development over twisting the screw. It is also considered safer! By pumping the hydraulic arm once you will introduce more tension.

The age and design of your vessel will dictate which version of technology you use. You can change from one to the other. But this needs to be performed whilst the boat is out of the water and the tension compensated for through the shrouds.
