The bay area is geological feature called a Caldera. The volcano erupted thousands of years ago. The space left by the magma underneath the summit left a huge cavern. The remaining structure was unable to support the roof. So it fell in.
Naxos is the largest island in the group. It has the tallest mountain. Mt Zas. The island was ruled by the Venetians for hundreds of years. You can see this in the architecture.
Crete is the ancient cultural center of the Aegean boasting plenty of minoan ruins and so is steeped in history.
